Radek Faksa spent last season moving on from his time with the Dallas Stars, but after a season with the St. Louis Blues, he and the Stars have decided to reunite with a three year deal.

Faksa's contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season, and because of both money and personnel, the two sides agreed to move on separately. Only Sam Steel remained from the regular trio of fourth liners that were fairly effective throughout that season.

Craig Smith was replaced by Colin Blackwell and Oskar Back emerged as a vital fourth line player and penalty killer that helped fill the shoes of Faksa. The problem was, the fourth line just did not have the same scoring touch that it did the year prior.

Meanwhile, Faksa stood out for St. Louis after former Stars coach Jim Montgomery came over from Boston mid-season, and his playoff presence was unmissable. Montgomery spoke frequently on the reliability and type of player Faksa was, and how their fourth line was their most consistent throughout his time there.

In the first round series against Winnipeg, Faksa helped the eighth-seeded Blues to the precipice of knocking out the President's Trophy winners, only for St. Louis to blow a two goal lead in the last two minutes of Game 7 and eventually lose in overtime.

The Blues were extremely physical in that series, and Faksa's line was a big part of it. It probably even helped Dallas beat Winnipeg in the second round despite not really scoring a lot of goals or being their best.

So now Dallas gets Faksa back for three years and a $2 million average per year. On one hand, the player was a good fourth liner throughout his tenure in Dallas, and the Stars know what they can get from him. On the other hand, the Stars consistently got little to no offense from him and his line while on the ice.

It's a gamble to think that Steel can go back to his form from two seasons ago with Faksa back on his line, and it's also a bit strange after the re-signing of Blackwell and having Back re-signed from a mid-season deal. Sure, Dallas lost some forwards but to pay $2 million for three years for a fourth liner does not seem like the answer.

The Stars have not yet replaced Mason Marchment of Mikael Granlund with any sort of top-6 forward either. Now, this forces Jamie Benn to play in a third line role again, which is good if he plays well but his scoring dropped off massively at the end of the season.

Only time will tell whether getting Faksa back will be part of the answer as to how to get to the Stanley Cup Final and lift the trophy.
