The Dallas Stars have announced that they will be re-signing Matt Duchene.
The 34 year-old signed a four-year, $4.5 million dollar contract with the Stars. The Ontario native signed with the Dallas Stars ahead of the 2023-24 season after unexpectedly being bought out by the Nashville Predators.

Going into contract negotiations, Duchene made it clear that he wanted term with this contract, as the previous two he signed with Dallas were just one-year contracts, both for $3 million. Duchene wanted stability and the Stars granted his wish. The first two years are a full no-movement clause and the last two have a modified no-trade clause with only five teams on the list he would allow to be traded to.
Duchene was the Stars leading scorer this past season with 82 points in 82 games, his second best season in his career, just shy of his personal best of 86 points. In 162 games with Dallas, Duchene tallied 55 goals, 92 assists and 147 points. He was also on a line with Tyler Seguin and Mason Marchment, which was one of the hottest lines in hockey in both seasons they were together.
However, with this contract annoucement, it is looking less likely that the trio could stick together next season. The Stars now currently have a little more than $450 thousand dollars to fill five roster spots, including bringing back Jamie Benn. Some likely targets to be shipped out could be Marchment, Matt Dumba or Ilya Lyubushkin.
The pending unrestricted free agents are Benn, Mikael Granlund, Evgenii Dadonov, Cody Ceci, Colin Blackwell and Brendan Smith. Nill has made it clear he has intentions to bring back Benn and has expressed interest in attempting to keep Granlund. They also have two pending restricted free agents in Mavrik Bourque and Nils Lundkvist.
General Manager, Jim Nill, addressed the current cap situation stating, "it's going to be a hectic three weeks." But if anyone is going to turn a grim situation into something of gold, it is going to be the two-time winning General Manager of the Year.
