Per reporting from Chris Johnston of The Athletic, Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond is poised to represent Sweden at the 2024 IIHF Men's World Championship, which will take place next month.
Raymond will head to Worlds fresh off a career year in Detroit. Raymond set career highs in goals (31), assists (41), and points (72), while emerging as a primary offensive driver for the Red Wings in his third NHL season. At his end-of-season press availability, Raymond expressed interest in participating in Worlds, while also noting that his current status as a restricted free agent complicated that ambition from an insurance perspective.
Evidently, Raymond and Sweden found a way around those issues to get him into the lineup. Raymond played for Sweden at last season's Worlds in Finland and Latvia. He played eight games, scoring two goals and providing six assists for a Sweden side that endured a disappointing sixth place finish after being upset by the Latvians in the quarterfinals.
As of this moment, Raymond is one of four Red Wings set to play in this year's tournament, with Dylan Larkin, Alex Lyon, and Jeff Petry already slated to play for Team USA (and Derek Lalonde and Alex Westlund set to serve on the Americans' coaching staff).
This year's tournament will begin on May 10th, with Czechia hosting and games split between Prague and Ostrava. Raymond and the Swedes will be looking to bring home their first gold medal since the 2018 iteration of the event in Denmark.
