Per reporting from Jon Morosi of the NHL and MLB Networks, the Red Wings will have a third representative for Team USA at the IIHF Men's World Championships, joining Dylan Larkin and Alex Lyon who were named to the roster earlier in the week, along with Derek Lalonde, who will serve as an assistant coach for the Americans. That player is defenseman Jeff Petry. Detroit goaltending coach Alex Westlund will also be on Team USA's staff.
Petry is coming off his first season back with his hometown Red Wings, in which he put up three goals and 21 assists in 73 games, while averaging 18:47 in ice time a night as he played a second pair role. Petry played 120:40 on the penalty kill this season, which ranked seventh on the team and fourth among the team's defensemen.
He has played in three previous World Championships for the United States in 2012, 2013, and 2014. He totaled 26 games across those three tournaments, scoring two goals and giving seven assists. The Americans finished seventh in 2012 and sixth in 2014 but collected the bronze medal in 2014.
This year's tournament will be hosted by Czechia, with games split between Prague and Ostrava, beginning on May 10th. Lalonde, Westlund, Lyon, Larkin, and Petry will be looking to return from Czechia with the Americans' first gold medal at men's Worlds since 1960, when the Olympics still served as the world championship in Olympic years (this ceased to be the case in 1968).
