From The Silky Mitten State: After Filip Hronek signed a massive extension to remain in Vancouver, should his fit with the Canucks trigger a re-evaluation of the trade that sent him away from Detroit?

On the latest episode of The Silky Mitten State, my co-host Connor Earegood and I discussed a massive new extension (eight years, $58 million) for former Detroit defenseman Filip Hronek.

It's a subject Connor wrote about earlier in the week, arguing:

Hronek's extension comes after he logged a career year playing alongside Norris Trophy favorite Quinn Hughes. The 26-year-old Hronek scored a career-best 48 points last season, albeit the majority came in the first half of the season. When asked about that dichotomy at the end of the season, Hronek gave an icy response that garnered lots of attention.

Regardless of the whens and hows of Hronek's scoring, it's probably a good thing that the Red Wings sold him at the deadline because his new contract extension would have put them in a bind. With star defenseman Moritz Seider and forward Lucas Raymond restricted free agents set to sign big extensions of their own, Detroit probably wouldn't have the cap space to sign Hronek in addition to its other stars.

In our discussion, I made the case that just because Hronek has fit in Vancouver doesn't mean the Red Wings should regret the trade.  Yes, Hronek was excellent alongside Quinn Hughes for a lot of this season, but that doesn't change the fact that he did not fit Detroit's timeline or salary structure, nor does it diminish Axel Sandin-Pellikka's appeal as a prospect whom the Red Wings drafted with a pick acquired in the trade.
