After a 1-0 loss to host Czechia, the 2024 IIHF Worlds campaign is over for Red Wings goaltending prospect Trey Augustine and Team USA
Yesterday in Prague, Team USA's 2024 IIHF Men's World Championship campaign came to an end at the hands of host Czechia, via a 1-0 loss in the quarterfinals. Pavel Zacha provided the Czech's with the game's lone goal in the second when a puck caromed off the stick of Brock Nelson then Zacha's body and past American goaltender Charlie Lindgren.
Team USA has not earned a medal at Worlds since taking home the bronze at the 2021 iteration of the event in Latvia. For a Team USA finish better than bronze at men's Worlds, you have to go all the way back to 1960, when the Americans' Olympic gold medal was also counted as a gold in Worlds. The U.S. has not won a non-Olympic Worlds gold medal since 1933 in Czechoslovakia.
Red Wings goaltending prospect Trey Augustine was forced briefly into starting duty after an injury to Detroit's Alex Lyon, who began the event as the Americans' number one option in net. However, Team USA eventually called on Lindgren and former Red Wing Alex Nedeljkovic as its primary options in Lyon's absence.
Still, the experience did provide Augustine with a chance to compete at the senior men's level for the first time, and he delivered commendable results. The Michigan State Spartan appeared in four games, earning a .929 save percentage and 1.89 goals against average.
Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry also played for the Americans, who posted an assist and an even rating in seven games at the event.
