Detroit called up its top prospect from Grand Rapids today. How can Simon Edvinsson spark the Red Wings?
Today, the Detroit Red Wings provided their fanbase with the Christmas gift it craved: a Simon Edvinsson call-up from the Grand Rapids Griffins.
Though the Red Wings snapped their losing skid yesterday night against the Flyers, it wasn't a victory that convinced anybody that Detroit had solved the extent of the problems that have been on display all month.
Chief among those has been a lack of reliability in the defensive zone—what Derek Lalonde referred to earlier this week as "screaming blow-ups" in relation to missed coverages in the 5-2 loss to Winnipeg Wednesday.
There might still be holes in Edvinsson's game, and as a young defenseman, he's bound to make a few errors as he re-acclimates to the NHL game. However, given that the Red Wings' veteran defenders have been plenty error-prone in recent weeks, it only seems fair he gets a chance to show what he can do.
On the most recent episode of The Silky Mitten State, I discussed just that with Connor Earegood. Here's a sampling of that conversation:
