J.T. Compher, Alex Lyon, and Derek Lalonde reflect on Detroit's three-game win streak snapping against the Carolina Hurricanes
On Friday night in Raleigh, the Detroit Red Wings fell 4-2 at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes, ending a three-game win streak and seven-game point streak.
Here's what J.T. Compher, Alex Lyon, and Derek Lalonde had to say about the Red Wings' first regulation defeat of 2024:
On mood after tonight's game: "I think it's a really good road trip. Disappointing result tonight. That's a really good hockey team. In this building, they play super tight. They play the right way. We probably didn't do enough to break through offensively. You've just got to keep chipping the puck in and trying to get it back. They played a good game tonight, and not the result we wanted."
On overall success of trip: "I think we're doing a lot of good things. That's one of the top teams in our conference, and that's the bar. We've seen it from a few different teams this year. It's a really good hockey team...You want every point possible, but we'll just keep trying to build this thing."
On how Carolina makes life so difficult for opponents: "They're super detailed, disciplined. They have really tight gaps all over the ice. Every guy throughout their lineup checks the right way. That's the way we wanna play...trying to be suffocating like they do."
On overall success of road trip: "Obviously we lost tonight, but I'm a big believer in if you just play the right way, good things are gonna happen. I think tonight we played the right way. Obviously it's the third game of a three-game road trip against a very difficult team in a difficult building, and I thought the boys played so hard tonight."
On the forthcoming five-game home stand: "It's awesome. Probably 10 days ago, before we started playing this little stretch here, I think we were looking down the barrel of some pretty good teams, and like I always say, we can't take it for granted. We're gonna have to bring our A game in two days if we're gonna wanna win."
On tonight's game: "Goal going into any road trip is to get as many points as games, so four points in three games, we won the road trip. A little bit of a missed opportunity here tonight. We put ourselves in a really good situation. We're tied 2-2 on the road with ten minutes left. I liked the way we were defending. I don't think they were gonna score a five-on-five goal. Unfortunately, we took a penalty there. That was the difference in the game."
On what went wrong: "We could've done more. There's a way to play against this team, and you almost have to flip what they do. They blindly just put everything on net, and then they wanna create races and havoc. You have to do that to them also...I thought we could've done a little bit more of that, but at the same time, I didn't mind our game. I think we're getting more and more comfortable in these tight games."
On Klim Kostin's presence back in the lineup: "Good. He's playing with some confidence. It gives us an opportunity to have rhythm with four lines. A night like this, against a team like that, I think you need to flow and have a rhythm with four lines."
On improvements from California road trip through tonight: "I think we're just a little more responsible with our game. Obviously, the way we're defending. Even tonight was a pretty good game...I thought we were doing a lot of what's been successful for us on this trip. We just weren't able to get it to the finish line tonight."
