This evening, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff provided an update on the status of Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas, whom it is widely believed will be traded this offseason. Specifically, Seravalli wrote that Detroit is one of seven teams to have "closely followed" a possible trade—the others being Columbus, Calgary, Vancouver, Boston, Chicago, and Nashville.
May 11, 2024; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Hurricanes center Martin Necas (88) takes a shot against the New York Rangers during the first period in game four of the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs at PNC ArenaAt the end of May, Connor Earegood wrote about the possibility of a Necas trade to Detroit, contending that it would be great but also unlikely:
Necas is a high-end scoring winger whose offensive talent was critical for a Carolina team that didn’t have a whole lot of firepower until the trade deadline. He did this for a Hurricanes team that prioritizes its defensive responsibilities more than trying to trade chances. For a Red Wings team in need of another top six winger and with machinations to become a better defensive team, Necas could check both boxes. But given his demands and his likely expensive contract, Necas might be priced too steep to make his acquisition possible for Detroit.
Clearly, Steve Yzerman considers the move plausible enough to consider this far, so perhaps the upside of Connor's assessment might well be at play. If the logistics (i.e. trade and contract) can work out, there can be little doubt that Necas would benefit from a change of scenery and that he could help the Red Wings.
As Connor laid out, Yzerman has been explicit about his desire for an impact forward in the Red Wings' top six, and by this point it seems probable that Necas' full potential (or at least the possibility of it) will have to come outside of Rod Brind'Amour's unique system in Carolina.
At the very least, it's a situation worth monitoring and an exciting possibility for Red Wings fans to consider.
