Mattias Ekholm Talks Concussion, Says He Got Lucky

Mattias Ekholm considers himself lucky. After suffering a concussion during a game against the Carolina Hurricanes, there was a chance the defenseman could miss some time for the Edmonton Oilers. Instead, he was back on the ice Tuesday, skating in his regular pairing with Evan Bouchard and it appears Ekholm will go Wednesday night versus the Calgary Flames.
He spoke about the hit that put him on the side of his head and his immediate thoughts as he realized something was wrong.
“It was scary at first. My legs just gave out, and I couldn’t even get up to my knees, but as soon as I got down the tunnel, it was like someone flipped the light switch back on, and I was back to normal with no headaches or symptoms. I’ve been feeling good since a few minutes after it happened. Luckily I have felt good ever since. I think have an angel watching over me, because it could have been a lot worse,” said Ekholm.
He was lucky and the Oilers are hoping some of that luck transfers over to Zach Hyman, who was knocked out of Monday's game versus the Detroit Red Wings with a concussion scare.
There's no timeline update on Hyman.
