EDMONTON – It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.

The Edmonton Oilers clawed their way to a 3-2 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. However, the looming Trade Deadline overshadowed the night.

This is primarily because the Oilers had reportedly agreed to a deal to acquire Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks. Regardless of what occurred outside the game, some impressive things happened inside the game.

Namely, the newest Oilers forward was thrown in the mix, doing more than float and flounder. Max Jones did well for himself, notching an assist, two shots, one takeaway, and three hits. All of that happened in 10:26 of ice time.

Not bad for a depth player.

After the game, he spoke to The Hockey News (and the rest of the media present) about how he felt during the game.

“I felt good,” Jones explained. “My game feels like it’s in a good spot. I feel like I’m playing free out there. The one-timer got away from me a little bit.”

“I don’t know if (it) was new gloves or stick or what it was, but I wish I would have gotten a little bit more wood on it.”

As far as first impressions go, Jones made an excellent one. Not just with his play during the game but also with his post-game interview. It isn’t easy to look as carefree as he did last night with all of the bright lights shining on you.

But, just like those lights shined, so did he.

He also spoke playfully about his new linemate, Corey Perry, who he played with on the Anaheim Ducks (the team that drafted him).

“It’s easy to play with Perrs (Corey Perry) and Kapanen,” Jones stated. “That pass (on Perry’s goal) isn’t something (the) fourth line should be making, coming out of the zone like that.”

Jones chuckles.

“I saw him skating so fast, I didn’t even know if it was Perrs.”

“I was joking with him,” Jones reveals his playful, verbal jab at Perry. “I don’t remember you skating that fast in Anaheim.”

“He was flying so, I just flicked it over there and got lucky.”

Trent Frederic may have been the primary piece coming to the Oilers from the Bruins, but the Oilers seem lucky to have Jones.
