The Edmonton Oilers lost the opening contest of the Cup Final to the Florida Panthers. The 3-0 defeat gives the team an opportunity to examine the game and figure out a way to stop Sergei Bobrovsky.

While the current iteration of the Oilers do that, an Oilers alumni is finding himself preparing for a new venture.

Ladislav Smid has been hired as an assistant coach for the U20 Czech National Team.

According to the story in the above tweet, Smid will replace Pavel Trnka on the coaching staff. This will be Smid's first professional hockey coaching position.

Smid spent eight seasons with the Oilers. In his eighth season with the club he was traded to the Calgary Flames. He would go on to play another two seasons there.

Smid was a stabilizing force on the Oilers back end during his tenure. He was never offensively minded but managed to collect 65 points in 474 games. Following his playing career in the NHL he spent five seasons playing in the Czechia Extraliga.

This new coaching position could be the first in a long line for the Oilers alumni. All the best to Smid in his new venture.
