Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche were all business in their final game against the Edmonton Oilers.

EDMONTON -- It was a special night, last night.

Not for the Edmonton Oilers - they eventually played with dignity after getting hammered for four goals against in the first 10 minutes by the Colorado Avalanche. Although the writing was on the wall from before puck drop.
Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Zach Hyman, Evander Kane, Mattias Ekholm and Evan Bouchard were all healthy scratches - while the Avalanche iced their full line up.

That was a recipe for disaster.
For starters, Stuart Skinner was the goalie to begin the game for the Oilers. After the first period though, they swapped for Calvin Pickard. He should have been the starting netminder for the team - especially if they knew how many guys they were going to be resting ahead of time.
Luckily they straightened out their game and started playing the right way - resulting in a 5-1 final score. But not before the Avalanche's top player broke a record.

Nathan MacKinnon became the first ever Avalanche player to record 140 points in a single season. In doing so, MacKinnon just had the single best offensive season for a member of the Avalanche franchise ever.
The previous record was 139 points - set by Peter Stastny in 1981-82 (back when the franchise was the Quebec Nordiques).

Obviously MacKinnon had something to play for in this game, so there was no way he was going to rest. Congratulations to MacKinnon for the fantastic accomplishment.
The Oilers and company now turn their attention to the playoffs and their first round opponent - the Los Angeles Kings.
