EDMONTON -- Connor McDavid is always developing his game.

From 64 goals last year to 100 assists this year - there is virtually nothing that isn't possible for the Edmonton Oilers captain. He has always had world-class skill, speed and offensive creativity.

Chief among his talents is his ability to handle the puck at high speeds - there really is no one better in the league. This was on full display during the All-Star Skills Competition.

But one part of his game that has flown completely under the radar this season - his physicality.

He has never been one to shy away from the physical aspect of hockey. McDavid has 375 hits in 569 games before this season - which is an average of 0.66 hits per game. Before his rookie season he injured his hand in a fight while still playing junior hockey for the Erie Otters of the OHL.

McDavid is a fierce competitor through and through - and he has elevated this side of his game this year. In 76 games he has thrown 118 hits, averaging 1.55 hits per game.

Even last year he showed flashes of this, throwing 89 hits in 82 games. But he took it to another level for the 2023-24 season.

Last night was a gentle reminder that McDavid can ratchet up the intensity in his game at a moment's notice. He threw two hits last night - the most notable one happened along the boards against Arizona Coyotes defenseman J.J Moser.

With the playoffs around the corner (and McDavid likely resting instead of playing tonight) look for the captain to up his intensity in the playoffs.
