Edmonton Oilers traded away a first round pick from a few years ago.

EDMONTON -- The work doesn't stop.
It may be summer, but the Edmonton Oilers are not done making moves. Earlier today Jeff Jackson and company announced a trade.
The Oilers traded away Xavier Bourgault and Jake Chiasson to the Ottawa Senators. In return they bring in Roby Jarventie and a 2025 fourth round pick. Bourgault was the Oilers 22nd overall pick in the 2021 entry draft.

Bourgault took a step back in offensive production this past season. In 2022-23 he registered 34 points in 62 AHL games. Last year he recorded 20 points in 55 games.
Jarventie had a better season than Bourgault in 2023-24. In 22 AHL games he recorded 20 points, nine of which were goals. He also suited up for seven NHL games where he recorded a single assist and averaged 7:31 of ice time.

This trade gives some insight into how the Oilers view Bourgault. Clearly things had stalled with the organization, and it was best for him to be given a fresh start elsewhere.
Jarventie could earn a bottom six role with the Oilers in the upcoming season. However, it's more likely that he starts the 2024-25 season in a top-line role with the Bakersfield Condors.

Jarventie has entered the final year of his entry level contract. He has a salary of $894,167 for this year. The Oilers currently have five selections in the 2025 entry draft; a third, two fourths, one sixth and one seventh round pick.
