EDMONTON -- Young inexpensive talent can be hard to come by.

This wasn't the case for the Edmonton Oilers this past season. While both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg earned a roster spot during the last stretch of regular season games, they both had a rocky season.

That all went away during the playoffs. Holloway recorded seven points in 25 games. He threw the second most hits (86) which was only one hit less than the top hitter, Sam Bennett. Holloway made his presence felt every time he hopped on the ice.

Broberg didn't play as much as Holloway in the playoffs. An argument could be made that he was more impactful. Broberg didn't see game action until Game four of the Western Conference final against the Dallas Stars.

He never looked out of place in the 10 games he played. His ice time for each of the Stanley Cup Final games were; 17:55, 17:12, 15:49, 18:24, 17:00, 16:44, and 14:37.

Broberg also spent the majority of his ice time on the right side, his off-side.

Philip Broberg Could Be the Target of an Offer Sheet

All of that makes him a prime candidate to be handed an offer sheet from another team. Or at least that's what Frank Seravalli believes. Seravalli was a guest on Oilers Now on Monday and laid out a potential scenario, "if I were an opposing team I'd be targeting Philip Broberg, I've said that before. I think he proved with his play in the playoffs that he should have been in this lineup a while before he was. For whatever reason that didn't work out."

"I'd be throwing six-years times $4.5 or $5-million...I'd really try to make life uncomfortable for the Oilers."

Seravalli then laid out a few reasons why it's in the Oilers best interest to hold onto Broberg, "this is a piece that they need for a lot of different reasons moving forward. Not just the youth that he brings but also from a cap perspective, also from an ability (perspective) as we saw in the playoffs."

"If you really need him to, to play either side. He never looked rattled, it never looked like the moment was too big for him. I think those are all really important attributes."

    Offer Sheets, The Mythical Unicorn

Offer sheets are incredibly rare in the NHL. Since 2006 there have only been 10 offer sheets. Two of those were not matched by the team that had control of the player.

The Oilers sent an offer sheet for Dustin Penner in 2007 that was not matched by the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers sent a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick as compensation to the Ducks. Penner's deal was a five-year contract worth $21.5-million.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi signed a one-year $6.1-million offer sheet from the Carolina Hurricanes. The Montreal Canadiens received a 1st and 3rd round pick in the 2022 draft from not matching the offer sheet.

Given how rare offer sheets are, it's tough to see one be submitted for Broberg. But anything can happen in this league, so never say never.
