Bob Stauffer reveals one goaltender who the Edmonton Oilers could target in free agency.

EDMONTON --  You can never have too many goalies. Good goalies, that is.

The Edmonton Oilers began the season with Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell in between the pipes. They ended with Skinner being backed up by Calvin Pickard after the disastrous start to the 2023-24 season.

With Jeff Jackson wanting to make his own stamp on this team, change is inevitable. On Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer talked about some things that the Oilers could do in the offseason.

"You've gotta look at the Campbell buyout, I think you re-sign Pickard." No surprises there, one way or another Campbell has played his last game in an Oilers jersey.

He then continued by discussing someone who the Oilers could target in a depth goalie role, "I'll give you a name of a guy they might want to sign as an organizational number three goalie, it's Pheonix Copley. They tried to sign him before, I wonder if that is the type of guy that makes sense."

Copley had a rocky road last year with the Los Angeles Kings. He only played eight games in the NHL. He had a 4-1-2 record to go along with a 3.16 goals against average (GAA) and a .870 save percentage (SV%).

He spent some time with the Kings AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign. Copley played 11 games there with much better results. He finished his stint with a 6-4-1 record as well as a 2.48 GAA and a .913 SV%.

This could be a beneficial route for the Oilers to take. Copley would provide competition for Olivier Rodrigue for the starter's role of the Bakersfield Condors. That will result in Rodrigue having another great year in his development or Copley providing great goaltending.

Either way it's a low risk play to add depth to the organization at a cheap price point. Time will tell if Jeff Jackson makes this kind of move, or waits for the new General Manager to come in and work on molding this team to his liking.
