The Edmonton Oilers revealed in a statement on Friday that newly acquired forward Colton Dach was placed on LTIR. As a result, Max Jones was recalled from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.
This is unfortunate news for Dach and the Oilers, given that he was starting to fit in well in a bottom-six role after the trade from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Dach, a 23-year-old Edmonton-area native (from St. Albert, Alberta), was dealt to the Oilers just before the March 6 trade deadline alongside Jason Dickinson in exchange for Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick (top-12 protected). The move was seen as adding physical depth for the playoff-contending Oilers, who weren't playing well defensively and seemed to be missing a physical edge.
However, Dach's tenure hit an immediate snag. In his third game with Edmonton—a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on March 10—he exited early in the first period after a heavy hit on Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson. He left the ice and did not return. He and defenseman Ty Emberson (who also left that game) were sent back to Edmonton for further evaluation afterward.
No specific injury details were disclosed by the team, but the LTIR designation indicates a significant issue expected to sideline him for some time. He's either out a minimum of 10 games or 24 days.
Jones, 27, provides a gritty option off the wing. He has NHL experience and is known for forechecking hard and maximizing his minutes. His recall makes sense given that the Oilers needed sandpaper, and not necessarily more skill in their bottom-six group.
