Edmonton Oilers are discussing having their first round pick as part of a package for a defenseman upgrade.

Edmonton Oilers have the second fewest goals scored against them all season.

EDMONTON -- Trade Deadline day is only one week away. As we approach March 8 it is clear that activity is starting to pick up - after Chris Tanev and Ilya Lyubushkin were both dealt in the past two days.

The Edmonton Oilers are looking for an upgrade on defense. While this isn't earth-shattering news, reports are coming out regarding negotiation details.

According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Oilers have been centering trade negotiations around their first round pick to facilitate a defense upgrade.

Many suspected that every disposable asset that the Oilers could use to better their chances of winning a Stanley Cup are being considered in trade talks. The first round pick shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The other detail of the report may be where they are encountering a hiccup.

Pagnotta also reported that, "they've discussed packaging it with a roster player to another club for a defenseman to upgrade their blueline."

This lines up with what Pierre LeBrun reported on yesterday regarding the Tanev trade. LeBrun is under the impression that the Oilers offered a first round pick and Cody Ceci to the Calgary Flames for Tanev - but the Flames didn't want to take back a player with term.

Regardless of how the Tanev deal panned out, there are still other defensemen available who could be an upgrade on their blueline. Sean Walker, Nick Seeler, and Alexandre Carrier are among a few who are rumored to be of interest to the team.
