On November 12th the Oilers were sitting at 3-9-1 with Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson on their way out - and Kris Knoblauch with Paul Coffey coming in to replace them.
They were ranked 31st in the NHL at the time of the coaching change - eight points out of a Wild Card position and 18 points behind the Pacific Division leading Vegas Golden Knights.
By the end of the regular season the Oilers finished second in the Pacific Division with 104 points - only five points back of the Vancouver Canucks.
For media and hockey fans alike, this past regular season was a wild ride. Now, some behind-the-scenes footage shows a rousing speech that Connor McDavid gave his teammates that illustrate how incredible their season has been.
At the end of the video (in the above tweet) McDavid says to his teammates, "[if] this year's taught us anything it's that when we (expletive) stick together like (expletive) brothers, and we work together and stick with it - we can (expletive) do anything. We brought ourselves from the (expletive) dead this year."
"That's a credit to everybody in this room."
Not only have the Oilers brought themselves from the dead, this playoffs has them breathing new life. Having knocked the Los Angeles Kings out of the playoffs for a third consecutive year - their focus turns to preparing for the next round of the playoffs against either the Nashville Predators or aforementioned Canucks.
