'You Can Only Dream of a Game Like That': Connor McDavid Wills the Oilers to Victory on a Night For the Record Books

The Edmonton Oilers win against the Detroit Red Wings on a night for the history books from Connor McDavid.

The Hockey News writers voted Connor McDavid most likely to win the Art Ross, Hart, and Maurice Richard Trophies.

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers beat the Detroit Red Wings by a whopping 8-4 score last night. Connor McDavid put the team on his back and had himself his first six assist night of his storied NHL career.

Cody Ceci scored his first goal of the season, Dylan Holloway notched a goal as well in the winning effort from the home team.

McDavid's performance was not overlooked by his teammates, as Holloway talked about in his post game availability, "great performance by Davo [McDavid], got us going."

Holloway doesn't see anything different from McDavid on a six point night versus a regular practice, he's a player who is always giving his best. "When the puck drops [to] the moment the final buzzer rings, he's pretty dialed in. It comes from a lot of his preparation, he's like that every day. Every day at practice, every workout he's dialed in."

Ceci - not known for his offense - sang his captain's praises after the game, despite notching a goal and an assist himself. "He won us the game."

When McDavid was asked about how he saw his game tonight, he naturally deflected and credited his teammates.

"Playing with some good players obviously."

During his time with the media he took time to highlight Evander Kane's goalscoring ability, Ceci's defensive play and how Holloway can be, "a little bit like a bull in a china shop."

With his performance tonight McDavid became the fourth fastest player to collect 600 career assists - it took him 616 games. The only players who have done it faster are Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr.

He's truly one of the greats.

Kris Knoblauch summarized McDavid's night succinctly, "I think his stat sheet says it all. Six assists, plus six, no power play time and he was skating. He was one of the few guys who was skating for a full 60 minutes."

"The plays that he made tonight were pretty phenomenal. If he's not on top of his game we probably aren't winning that one."

After last night's game he is six points closer to 1000 career points. But for now he'll enjoy his newest accomplishment, one that might not come around for a while. In the words of Holloway:

"You can only dream of a game like that."
