The Edmonton Oilers may have hit a home run with this draft pick from several years ago.
The Edmonton Oilers have been undergoing a transformation since Ken Holland was given the reigns as the general manager. The biggest - and arguably best trade - happened this past deadline, which saw two-way defensive stalwart Mattias Ekholm find his way to the Oilers.

In 21 games after the trade, Ekholm collected 14 points. The Oilers posted a record of 18-2-1 to close out the regular season with Ekholm in the lineup. Throughout that time he was able to establish chemistry with Evan Bouchard - which helped the young blue liner elevate his play.

While speaking to Bob Stauffer on Oilers Now, Ekholm described the process of playing with Bouchard. "I give him credit, I think he just realized he has the offensive upside that not many other guys in this league have...you have to play that way and understand that a mistake that goes the wrong way can't affect your next shift."

It's great to see Ekholm show Bouchard the little details that define a great hockey player - especially the ability to shake off a bad play before you come out for your next shift. Hockey keeps getting faster and guys with more skill run through the league. It's all about working hard every shift and when things go sideways, you shrug it off and then you come out and do it all over again.
Additionally, Ekholm was asked about the Oilers top defensive prospect, Philip Broberg and if he will be in a position to help him grow. Ekholm had this to say, "the part that might stand out is that I feel like our styles of game aren't too different. I feel like we're both the same - I think maybe he's a bit more offensive, I think we are just scratching the surface with him."

Ekholm also shared what he thinks Broberg needs to do in order to take the next step in his development. "with Philip...take your ice. (Just) don't be shy, don't be timid."

If the captain's skates are any indication of what the pairings could be come October - Ekholm will have a first-hand look at pushing Broberg. If he is paired with Ekholm he will no doubt get the minutes he needs to feel confident in his game. The fact that Ekholm himself compared Broberg's game to himself has to have fans of the team (and the players) jumping for joy for the time when he finally breaks out.
