Samuel Jonsson has signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers. The 21-year-old netminder was voted Goalie of the Year in the Hockey Allsvenskan.

Jonsson just wrapped up a spectacular regular season and playoffs. Although his team (BIK Karlskoga) was knocked out of the postseason, he registered a 2-3 record to go along with a 2.15 goals against average (GAA) and a .913 save percentage (SV%).

Jonsson led the Hockey Allsvenskan in GAA (1.88) and shutouts (6), while playing in 24 games. The young Swede finished the regular season with a 17-6-0 record to go along with a .922 SV%.

Does Samuel Jonsson Replace Olivier Rodrigue?

With Jonsson in the fold, it will certainly make fans wonder what Olivier Rodrigue’s future is with the team. Rodrigue is on an expiring contract and will be an RFA in the summer.

The lack of games for Rodrigue following his call-up to the Oilers may make some Oilers fans wonder about what the organization sees in him at the NHL level. Although without giving the youngster a fair shake, it’s tough to make a definitive statement about it.

Jonsson’s addition gives the Oilers more options at every level, which is a most-welcome problem.
