Nov 26, 2023; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon (34) makes a save in front of Minnesota Wild center Joel Eriksson Ek (14) in the third period at Little Caesars Arena.Alex Lyon, DET at BUF (30% rostered)
The Wings are on a roll with five wins in their past six games, and they wouldn’t be on this tear without Lyon’s goaltending. Ville Husso notched the win against the Habs but did not play well enough to dispel any doubts about his ability to be a No. 1 starter. The Sabres offense is a little scarier than the Hawks or the Wild’s under Dean Evason, but the Wings should be able to pull off the win.
(NEW) Pheonix Copley, LA at CLB (12% rostered)
Copley's been very good lately with only one goal allowed in two games, though the Kings' strong play is a big reason for that, too. Copley will kick off the Kings' lengthy road trip and I certainly like his prospects in this matchup. He's as good an option, if not better, than Lyon against the Sabres, who will have top center Tage Thompson back in the lineup.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, BUF vs. DET (39% rostered)
There’s certainly an argument to be made for starting Luukkonen. He was very good against the Preds in his previous start, allowing just two goals on 29 shots, and the Sabres are still a very talented group capable of upsetting very good teams. The difference here is momentum; the Wings are on a roll while the Sabres have lost three straight. Note, however, that the Sabres have won four straight matchups against the Wings, and while their all-time record is 70-70-13, the home team is 41-26-8. There is upset potential here but the Wings have the edge.
Editor's note: Luukkonen will not start due to illness, which means Eric Comrie will be in net. Comrie has lost four straight games with 13 goals allowed in three games in November. Against a potentially high-powered offense, he's inadvisable.
Dan Vladar, CGY vs. MIN (2% rostered)
Jacob Markstrom apparently hurt his hand during Monday’s practice, which puts Vladar in line to start against the red-hot Wild, who are so far unbeaten under John Hynes. The Flames are in much better shape than at the beginning of the season and they’re keeping games close with their past three games all decided by just one goal. This is a coin flip matchup with no guarantees that Vladar will be able improve on his .883 SP.
p.s. Markstrom's injury may also mean Dustin Wolf gets called up for the second time this season. He'll be worth a speculative add should Markstrom miss an extended period of time as one of the league's best goalie prospects. Keep an eye on Wolf.
Anton Forsberg, OTT vs. NYR (5% rostered)
With Joonas Korpisalo struggling and Forsberg coming off a 39-save shutout against the Kraken, it’s likely Forsberg gets the call again. The Rangers will be a very tough opponent and it’s been very hard to rely on the Sens offense. You’re hoping for a similar result; a lot of saves, a good save percentage and, hopefully, a win, though the Rangers are favored.
Petr Mrazek, CHI vs. NSH (19% rostered)
With Juuse Saros getting back on track, it’s going to be very hard for the Hawks to provide enough goal support for Mrazek to get the win. He’s also allowed nine goals in his past two games and has not kept opponents to two goals or less since Nov. 4.
Editor's note: Arvid Soderblom will get the start as the Hawks go back to their usual rotation. He's allowed 10 goals in his past three starts and a less desirable streaming option than Mrazek. In two career appearances against the Preds, Soderblom has a .875 SP and 3.67 GAA.
John Gibson, ANA at COL (47% rostered)
Home-and-home series tend to be splits, and this is a revenge game for the Avs after losing in Anaheim on Saturday in a shootout. Gibson’s stats have been declining after a strong start to the season and he’s posted a save percentage above .900 just four times in his past eight starts. I’d be very wary of this matchup even though the Avs have lost three straight; they’re just too good to keep losing.
Mackenzie Blackwood, SJ at NYI (14% rostered)
There’s a chance we’ll see Kaapo Kahkonen in this matchup instead with Blackwood coming off a game where he allowed six goals, though it ended up being only a one-goal loss. However, Blackwood does give the Sharks the best chance of winning, and he can certainly rack up the saves.
Editor's note: Kahkonen will indeed get the start. Though he's won two straight games, don't look for a low goals against or high save percentage. The Isles are rightfully favored in this matchup and have had no problems scoring goals lately. While Blackwood was a worthwhile start for the volume of saves, I'm less convinced Kahkonen offers the same value.
Elvis Merzlikins, CLB vs. LA (39% rostered)
The Kings may not have an explosive offense but they’re an excellent team that can wear you down, and they don’t miss their scoring chances very often. The Kings are fourth in the league in goals for at 5-on-5 even though they rank 15th in expected goals, per naturalstattrick.com. Over the past two seasons, the Kings have won three of their past four meetings though they’ve been closer than expected with two games decided in overtime.
