Seth Jones returns, and other defensemen are heating up. Grab these waiver wire gems before your league mates do.
On every game day this season, THN Fantasy will highlight players and goalies for fantasy hockey managers to stream, roster or utilize in standard leagues and/or DFS games. Players and goalies highlighted for streaming in standard leagues are rostered in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues.
Seth Jones, FLA at EDM (64% rostered) – FanDuel $5,500
Jones didn’t look too rusty despite missing more than 20 games, skating 20:16 against the Canucks and finished with a shot, a hit and a plus-1 rating despite losing 5-2. Jones has the most offensive upside on a Panthers and will quarterback the power play even though it’s his biggest strength. The Oilers’ defense and goaltending could implode at a moment’s notice, so there’s definitely a potential for a high-scoring game.
Mikey Anderson, LA vs. PHI (3% rostered) – FanDuel $3,700
Certainly not the first (or the second, or the third) player you’d think about on the Kings defense, but Anderson is one of the more underrated defensemen in the league. A long-time partner of Drew Doughty, Anderson logs significant minutes every night and has scored four points in his past five games. Managers can capitalize while he’s on a hot streak, and DFS games note Anderson is also a very consistent shot blocker.
Connor Murphy, EDM vs. FLA (2% rostered) – FanDuel $3,900
Like the Kings’ Anderson, there’s certainly some value to be had here for DFS games. Murphy’s playing more minutes for the Oilers after getting cast aside by the Hawks, who’ve shifted their focus on developing their younger defensemen. The veteran defender just scored his first goal as an Oiler, but you’re not really for points here; instead, Murphy’s fantasy value is derived from blocked shots, and this should be a pretty wide-open game since neither’s team defense has been particularly good.
