2024-25 Breakout: Lane Hutson

Forwards

Barrett Hayton, C, UTA (17% rostered)

Hayton's roster percentage should spike in the very near-term based on his early-season production. Finally fully healthy, Hayton has goals in all three of Utah's games to begin the season, racking up three tallies and five points in total. Skating between Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz, the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft might finally be ready for a long-awaited breakout.

J.T, Compher, C/LW/RW, DET (10% rostered)

Compher moved from Colorado to Detroit last season with a minimal decline in production. He netted 19 goals and 48 points in 77 games with the Red Wings last season after totalling 17 goals and 52 points in 82 outings over his final campaign with Colorado. A rise in shooting percentage offset a significant decline in shots per game. Centering a revamped second line in Hockeytown, a rise in output is expected from Compher.

Maxim Tsyplakov, RW, NYI (8% rostered)

Tsyplakov signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Islanders in May following a 31 goal season with Spartak Moscow of the KHL. He was all but penciled in the lineup upon signing but earned his top-six spot with a strong camp. Tsyplakov is skating on the second line both at even-strength and on the man-advantage, notching a goal in NHL debut.

Anthony Beauvillier, LW, PIT (4% rostered)

Beauvillier, a former first round pick of the Islanders in 2015, was never able to put it altogether with New York. He topped out with 21 goals in 2017-18 and 40 points in 2023-23. Beauvillier played for four teams the last two seasons and signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Penguins in July. He started the season on the third line, but is already seeing first line minutes next to Sidney Crosby, boding well for possible success.

Alex Laferriere, RW, LA (2% rostered)

Laferriere played in the bottom-six last season for L.A., posting 23 points, 113 hits and 147 shots on net in 81 regular-season contests. With Arthur Kaliyev sidelined for a least a month, Laferriere is receiving a chance to skate on top line next to Anze Kopitar and Adrian Kempe. If he is able to hold his own, Laferriere could remain in this spot even when Kaliyev returns.

Will Cuylle, LW, NYR (1% rostered)

Cuylle, a second-round pick, 60th overall in 2020, had a solid rookie campaign while bouncing between the third- and fourth-lines. He posted 13 goals on 119 shots, eight assists and 249 hits while averaging 11:08 of ice time over 81 games for the Rangers. Cuylle clearly worked on his skating this offseason, as he shown a significant uptick in his foot speed early this season. Cuylle has notched a goal and two helpers with eight hits through two games on a highly effective trio with Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko.

Defensemen

Lane Hutson, D, MTL (48% rostered)

This is likely your last chance to roster Hutson, and it's possible that time has passed. Four assists in three games, including a pair on the power play, has raised his value. Mike Matheson is still Montreal's top defenseman but Hutson is coming quickly to challenge that status. Get on board now.

Nikita Zadorov, D, BOS (15% rostered)

The man who has asked not to be called 'Big Z' in Boston in deference to Zdeno Chara is looking to play a similar physical role for the Bruins. He is not expected to score much, but provide hits from the back line, That Zadorov might benefit from skating next to Charlie McAvoy and exceed his prior career-high of 22 points set in 2021-22 with Calgary.

Artem Zub, D, OTT (1% rostered)

If looking for scoring Zub is not your man, If a league where hits and blocks and time on ice are some of your categories, roll with Zub. He is usually good for more than than 100 of each while skating 20+ minutes nightly at likely a cheap cost in DFS.

Simon Edvinsson, D, DET (3% rostered)

Edvinsson saw nine games in 2022-23 and 16 games last season. Both cameos paved the way for a full-time roll this season for Edvinsson. The Swedish defensemena taken sixth overall in 2021 has seen at least 19 minutes of ice time each of his first two games this season while playing in the top-four. Scoring and power-play time will eventually come, likely as this season wears on.
