The Stanley Cup will head back to South Florida after the Panthers names are added
In what is expected to be a regular occurrence in these parts over the next few months, here is an update on what’s happening with the Stanley Cup.
It’s been quite a fortnight for the most famous trophy in sports.
Thanks to the Panthers jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final, the Cup had to join the rest of us in going back and forth from South Florida to Edmonton as the Oilers pushed the series to seven games.
Once the Cats finally claimed the Cup after winning a dramatic Game 7 last Monday, it’s been taken all over South Florida, into the ocean, to nightclubs and bars, it’s had pasta and pizza eaten out of it, beer, champagne and apple juice sipped from it…you know, the full local experience.
After a quick trip out to Las Vegas for NHL Awards and the 2024 NHL Draft, the Stanley Cup was back in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday for the Panthers Championship Parade, and residual partying.
Now, it’s time for a little break for the Cup, but for good reason.
According to NHL.com columnist Dave Stubbs, the Cup has been taken to Old Montreal.
That’s where silversmith Louise St. Jacques will begin engraving the 52 names of Florida Panthers players, coaches and staff onto the historic and prestigious trophy.
The Panthers are expected to have a list of names submitted to the NHL this week.
Once it’s approved, the list goes to St. Jacques, who will hammer, not engrave, the names into the trophy.
This is only the second year that the names have been added before the team’s got their day with the Cup.
It adds another exceptionally cool element to the celebrations, as each person who gets their day with the Stanley Cup will also be able to see their name staring back at them.
Those special days with the Cup are expected to begin later this month.
