The 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase is well underway, and on Wednesday, Team USA and Team Finland battled it out in a tightly contested affair.

This was the third matchup between Finland and the U.S., as Finland won the first matchup before the Americans responded in the second. The third and final game saw Finland defeat the Americans 3-2. 

With the game tied in the first period, Florida Panthers prospect Vilho Vanhatalo scored a breakaway goal to open the scoring. The 6-foot-3, 18-year-old received a pass at the Americans' blue line before taking a few strides and rifling a wrist shot over the blocker side shoulder of the American goaltender. 

This was Vanhatalo's second point of the tournament, as he picked up an assist in the first game.

Vanhatalo was selected in the sixth round (168th overall) by the Panthers in the 2026 NHL draft. He spent his draft year playing in Finland, registering one assist in eight games with Tappara in Liiga. He spent the majority of the season in Finland's U-20 league, scoring 10 goals and 19 points in 38 games. 

Vanhatalo was the fourth selection made by the Panthers, following Simas Ignatavicius, Ryder Cali and Jonas Kemps. Vanhatalo is one of two Panthers prospects participating in the World Junior Summer Showcase, joining Shea Busch, who is representing Team Canada.

With a massive 6-foot-3 frame, Vanhatalo weighs just 187 pounds, giving him plenty of room to add muscle and grow into his frame. 

With a strong performance at the Summer Showcase followed by improved play in Finland's top professional division, Vanhatalo could be representing Finland at the world juniors in December.
