According to a report, Pontus Aberg is leaving the KHL to sign with the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the National League (NL).
"According to what the HockeyNews.se portal reports, Swedish striker Pontus Aberg will be returning to Rapperswil, after playing last season in the KHL with Barys Astana (17 goals and a total of 37 points in 64 games)."
Aberg, 30, was a second round pick by the Nashville Predators in 2012. He made his NHL debut with the Predators in game 3 of the Western Conference finals in 2017. The Predators made it to the Stanley Cup that season but lost to the eventual Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Nashville ended up trading Aberg to Edmonton for Mark Letestu. The Oilers put him on waivers after he recorded two goals and eight points in 16 games. The Anaheim Ducks claimed him off waivers.
The following season Aberg had 11 goals and 19 points in 37 games and was traded to Minnesota for Justin Kloos. The Wild's general manager at the time was Paul Fenton, who was known for bringing in all the former Predators players from when he was an assistant general manager.
Aberg posted one goal in 22 games and did not re-sign in Minnesota after Fenton was fired. Aberg played five games with Toronto after his days in Minnesota then went to the KHL. After one season in the KHL and one in the SHL, Aberg returned to the AHL with Ottawa's AHL team.
He played one season where he recorded 11 points in 17 games then left for Rapperswil-Jona of the NL. He then played for BK Mlada Boleslav of the Czechia league that same season and signed a deal in the KHL the following year. Aberg has now returned to the NL with the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers.
