Before the 2024-25 season started I wrote some bold predictions for the Minnesota Wild. I think it is time to look back on them and see what was correct, if any and what came close.
The Wild center recorded 24 goals and 60 points during the 2024-25 season. The expectation for Marco Rossi was high coming into the year based on where he was slotted to play. He opened the season with Mats Zuccarello and Kirill Kaprizov.
Even though Kaprizov missed half the season, Rossi still recorded a 60-point season and really broke out for the Wild during the year.
Wild's Marco Rossi Continues To Have A Big Offseason, Up 14 Pounds
Minnesota Wild forward Marco Rossi is known for his work ethic. He has already had a big offseason by <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/minnesota-wild/latest-news/wild-s-marco-rossi-training-with-hall-of-famer-joe-thornton">training with Hall of Fame center Joe Thornton.</a>
My second bold prediction was that Matt Boldy would score 40 goals during the 2024-25 season. He recorded career-highs in assists with 46, points with 73 and game-winning goals with ten.
Despite some career-highs, Boldy did not record a career-high in goals but instead finished the season with 27. He scored five goals in six playoff games and was ranked by the NHL Network as a top-20 winger in the league.
I will keep this prediction for this upcoming year.
When I first wrote this article I said that Marcus Foligno and Yakov Trenin would combine for 500 hits. I decided to change it last second to what it is above because I felt 500 hits was not really a bold prediction.
The two of them combined for 494 hits. Foligno had 253 and Trenin had 241. Guess I should have kept it.
Foligno finished the year 16th in Selke voting. He received one first place vote along with a third, fourth and fifth. Trenin did not receive a single vote.
This prediction was looking pretty good before Kaprizov got injured. He first got hurt in December and his last game he played before missing a month was Dec 23.
He had 23 goals, 27 assists and 50 points in 34 games to start the season. The Wild were 21-10-4 and ranked fifth in the NHL in points percentage.
Kaprizov ranked tied for second in goals with William Nylander at the time and was tied for third in points with Nikita Kucherov.
He ended up missing half the season and finished with 25 goals, 31 assists and 56 points in 41 games. He played just seven more games following Dec 23.
On Nov 1, Kaprizov became the first player during the season to reach the 20-point mark and just the fifth different player since 2000-01 with 21 through his first 10 games of a campaign.
Only Connor McDavid (twice), Leon Draisaitl, and Mario Lemieux have had more points through the first ten games of a season in NHL history since 2000-01.
It was an incredible start to the season for Kaprizov and if he had never gotten hurt, I think he would have won the MVP trophy. He was on pace for 54 goals, 64 assists and 118 points.
It is just a matter of time before Kaprizov wins the MVP.
