Earlier this off-season, the Minnesota Wild acquired forward Blake Coleman and defenseman Olli Maatta from the Calgary Flames in exchange for blueliner Jake Middleton, a 2027 third-round pick, a 2028 fourth-round pick, and a 2029 second-round pick.

While Maatta has the potential to be a solid pickup for the Wild's defensive group, it is clear that Coleman is the more notable addition of the pair for Minnesota. 

With the Wild having the goal of winning the Stanley Cup, it makes a lot of sense that they have brought in Coleman. The 34-year-old forward is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, after all, but there is much more to like about him than just that. 

Coleman is exactly the kind of heart-and-soul player that contenders need to have on their roster. He is well-known for being a good leader and plays a very heavy game, as evidenced by his 152 hits last season for Calgary. With this, he is going to make the Wild a tougher team to go up against for opponents. 

Coleman is a solid offensive contributor and plays a strong two-way, which only add to his appeal. In 69 games during this past season with the Flames, he posted 20 goals, 15 assists, and 35 points. He also set career highs with 30 goals and 54 points in 2023-24, so he can be a real difference-maker when playing at his best.

With all of this, Coleman should be a very good addition to the Wild's roster. His strong all-around play allows him to make an impact in all situations, and it will be interesting to see what he can do in Minnesota.
