After six NHL appearances, the 22-year-old forward heads to the AHL to prioritize consistent playing time over serving as a healthy scratch for parts of Minnesota’s current road trip.
The Minnesota Wild continues its road trip with one last stop in Utah before returning home for one single home game on Thursday.
Tuesday's game against the Utah Mammoth is a Central Division clash between two top teams in their respective divisions.
Minnesota made a roster move on Monday. Wild Mason Shaw is already up as the extra forward; the Wild sent down Rieger Lorenz to the American Hockey League.
Lorenz, 22, spent the past few weeks with Minnesota and appeared in five consecutive games early in his stint with the NHL club.
Despite that, Lorenz has been a healthy scratch for three of the Wild's last four games. The 22-year-old has one assist, 15 penalty minutes, seven hits, a fight and three blocked shots while averaging 8:39 of ice time across six appearances with the Wild.
Sending Lorenz down will provide him to play consistent minutes with Iowa. Wild head coach John Hynes before the trip that the Foligno brothers would stay in Minnesota and rehab before possibly joinging the team towards the end of the trip.
There isn't a need to have two healthy scratched forwards, so the Wild will keep Shaw as the extra and send Lorenz down to play big minutes, which is better for him than sitting in the visiting team's press boxes.
