Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St-Louis had a special reason to attend the Just for Laughs festival this past week, he had a special mission.
During the Stanley Cup playoffs, Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St-Louis made the media chuckle when he explained that every night, when he gets home, he watches his favorite TV show: Seinfeld. The show is what allows him to wind down from what is a very stressful job and go to bed:
I watch Seinfeld. I mean, what is there, nine seasons? I probably watch it four times in a row. To me, Seinfeld is the show that can let me disconnect from everything. It's the show about nothing. So, you can just think about nothing. […] You don't even have to actually watch it. You can just listen to it because you know the characters, so it's easy to fall asleep. On Thursday, the coach got to meet the man behind the show, Jerry Seinfeld, who was in town for two sold-out gigs at the Just for Laughs festivals. St-Louis wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to meet the man and to give him a little something. He surprised him backstage at Place des Arts with a personalized home red No. 1 Canadiens jersey before posing for a few pictures.
The coach said in April that he must have watched the nine seasons about four times by now, and it certainly didn’t sound like he was growing tired of it. The story doesn’t say whether he’ll keep doing that this season now that his wife will be free to join him in Montreal, since their youngest boy is heading to college and won’t be home anymore, as he revealed in an interview with morning show Salut Bonjour last October.
St-Louis’ contract runs until the end of the season, and it is expected that he will put pen to paper on an extension before the puck drops on the season; but that’s just one item on GM Kent Hughes’ to-do list. He still has to sign defenseman Arber Xhekaj and forward Zachary Bolduc to new deals.
