The Montreal Canadiens had a day off yesterday, which meant no practice, but for some of the players, it also meant they had time to contribute to a great cause.

Fresh off a 6-5 overtime loss in Pittsburgh, the Montreal Canadiens had a day off on Sunday, but a few players used it for a good cause. Jake Evans, along with his wife Emily, Nick Suzuki, Chris Kreider, and Mike Matheson, helped raise over $350,000 for Sarah’s Fund for the Cedars Cancer Foundation at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

The event took place on October 4 from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM in Danyluk Park in Mount Royal. The organization described it on its website as a fun-filled day of races, activities, and celebrations in support of Sarah’s Fund for Cedars and the children treated on Sarah’s Floor at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Every dollar raised will be reinvested to help provide vital care, support programs, and joyful moments for young cancer patients and their families. Participants could register themselves and up to 5 family members for $100 and were asked to raise funds by soliciting colleagues, friends, and family, and inviting them to register and attend as well.

Sarah Cook was diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer at just 8 years old in 2000 and underwent a year of radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. During that time, she decided to help make every sick child’s time at the Children’s as warm, comfortable, and positive as possible and, with her parents' help, created a Foundation: the Sarah’s Fund for Cedars. Sarah is now over 30 years old, in excellent health, and remains an inspiration for children battling cancer.

Since 2001, Sarah’s Fund for Cedars has raised almost $15 million for the Hematology-Oncology Division at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. It’s great to see some of the players take part in such noble causes, and having many dads on the team certainly helps them understand the importance of this work.
