    The New Jersey Devils suffered a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at Prudential Center on Wednesday night. It marked their second consecutive loss.

    The Devils once again surrendered the game's opening goal. Juraj Slafkovsky scored his sixth goal of the season 12:48 into the first period. Cole Caufield collected the lone assist.

    After 20 minutes, the shots were even at ten a piece, but Montreal had the 1-0 lead.

    With a little over five minutes remaining in the second period, Joshua Roy scored his first NHL goal and extended his team lead to 2-0. Sean Monahan and Joel Armia collected the assists.

    In the waning seconds of the second period, Canadiens' forward Nick Suzuki was called for a double minor high-sticking penalty against Kevin Bahl. The Devils fired two shots at Montembeault before the period ended.

    After 40 minutes, the Canadiens held a 2-0 lead despite the Devils having a 10-7 shot advantage in the second period.

    New Jersey had the man advantage for the first three minutes of the third period. It took 47 seconds for Luke Hughes to score his eighth goal of the season. Nico Hischier and Timo Meier were credited with the assists.

    Less than a minute later, Alexander Holtz's slap shot got past

    Montembeault to tie the game. New Jersey scored two power-play goals in a span of 1:38.

    The game-winning goal was scored with under five minutes remaining. Cole Caufield skated into the Devils' crease and tapped in a rebound to secure a 3-2 victory for the Canadiens.

    Nico Daws, who made his third straight start, made 22 saves on 25 shots.

    UP NEXT: The Devils will face the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, Jan. 19.
