New Jersey Devils goaltender Jacob Markstrom suffered a sprained MCL during the club's Jan. 22 matchup against the Boston Bruins after forward Justin Brazeau collided into him. He has been out of action since, and Jake Allen has taken on New Jersey's starting goalie role.
It is always a tall task for a backup goalie to take over when a starter gets injured, but Allen has undoubtedly stepped up big time.
Jake Allen In seven appearances since Markstrom's injury, Allen has a 4-3-0 record, a .934 save percentage, a 2.08 goals-against average, and two shutouts. This includes an outstanding 34-save shutout against the Montreal Canadiens in his last start on Feb. 8.
Due to his impressive stretch of play, Allen now has a .912 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average in 21 games. It is hard to expect more from a backup goaltender, and the 34-year-old is proving to the Devils that they made the right call acquiring him from the Habs last off-season.
