When looking at the New Jersey Devils' roster, it is fair to argue that they could use more forward depth. Because of this, it would not be particularly surprising if we saw them invite a player or two to training camp on a professional tryout (PTO).
One unrestricted free agent (UFA) left who the Devils should consider taking a shot on is forward Brett Leason.
Leason, 26, became a UFA on July 1 after the Anaheim Ducks elected not to send him a qualifying offer. This was after the 6-foot-5 winger posted five goals, 12 assists, 17 points, 64 hits, and a minus-2 rating in 62 games with the Pacific Division club.
Leason demonstrated during the 2023-24 season with the Ducks that he has the potential to provide decent secondary scoring when playing at his best. In 68 games that campaign with the Ducks, the 2019 second-round pick set career highs with 11 goals and 22 points. He also was noticeable when it came to the physical side of the game, as he finished the campaign with a career-high 80 hits.
Overall, with the Devils needing more forward depth, Leason could be worth taking a flier on with a PTO. It will be interesting to see if they do just that from here.
Devils Made Smart Move Re-Signing Key Goalie
One of the <a href="https://thehockeynews.com/nhl/new-jersey-devils">New Jersey Devils</a>' most notable moves was re-signing goaltender Jake Allen to a five-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $1.8 million. Allen was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1, but the Devils were able to get him re-signed right before free agency opened with this fascinating deal.
