During this past off-season, the New Jersey Devils acquired goaltender Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames. This move was undoubtedly needed for the Devils, as they had serious goaltending troubles during the 2023-24 campaign. Thus, adding a star between the pipes like Markstrom was massive for the Metropolitan Division club.

Markstrom put together a solid first season with the Devils, posting a 26-16-4 record, a 2.50 goals-against average, a .900 save percentage, and four shutouts in 49 games. He was also one of the Devils' rare bright spots during their first-round series loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. In five games, he had a .911 save percentage and a 2.78 goals-against average.

Now that the season is over, eyes should be on Markstrom this summer. The 35-year-old goaltender will be in the final season of his contract in 2025-26, which means that he will soon be eligible to sign a contract extension with the Devils. When speaking to team reporter Amanda Stein, the 2008 second-round pick made it clear that he is open to the idea of signing an extension with New Jersey.

"If Fitzy is calling, I'm answering." Markstrom said.

Given how much of an impact Markstrom made in his first season as a Devil, it would not be surprising in the slightest if New Jersey looked to extend him. When playing at his best, he is a true difference-maker, so it would be significant if the Devils could get him signed to a contract extension.

Markstrom will officially be eligible to sign a contract extension with the Devils once July 1 arrives. It will be fascinating to see if the star goaltender and the Devils can work out a new deal once we get to the summer.
