One of the New Jersey Devils' top objectives this off-season was to improve their forward depth. They have done just that early on this summer, as they have brought in a few new forwards. This includes former Edmonton Oilers winger Connor Brown.

Leading up to the first day of free agency, Brown was a player who stood out as a potential target for the Devils. The Devils clearly need some help in their bottom six, and by bringing in Brown on a four-year, $12 million contract, they will now be getting just that.

Brown showed this past season with the Oilers that he is still plenty capable of providing solid secondary offensive production. In 82 games with Edmonton in 2024-25, he recorded 13 goals, 30 points, and a plus-9 rating. He was also impactful during the post-season, recording five goals, nine points, and a plus-1 rating in 20 games. If he translates this kind of offense in a third-line role for the Devils, he will be a very solid pickup for them.

Yet, there's more to Brown's game than just his offense. The 31-year-old forward is also well-known for his solid defensive play and effective penalty-killing ability, so he undoubtedly should help the Devils in these areas, too.

Ultimately, with the Devils needing to improve their bottom six, they made a smart move bringing in a solid veteran like Brown. He should give the Devils' forward group a boost in multiple areas, and it also does not hurt that he can move up and down the lineup and remain effective.

It will be fascinating to see what kind of season Brown can put together for the Devils in 2025-26 from here.

One of Mercer's biggest assets is his versatility.
