The New Jersey Devils should be looking to make changes to their forward group this off-season. It is apparent that they need more secondary offensive production if they hope to be a bigger threat next season, so they will likely be aggressive in free agency.
When looking at this year's pending unrestricted free agents, they have an interesting buy-low potential target in forward Andrew Mangiapane.
After being traded to the Washington Capitals this past off-season, Mangiapane struggled in DC. In 81 games, he recorded 14 goals and 28 points, which is below expectations for the 29-year-old winger. Yet, when looking at his recent past seasons, it is absolutely apparent that he has the potential to bounce back next season.
Just back in 2023-24 with the Calgary Flames, Mangiapane recorded 40 points in 75 games. He also recorded at least 40 points in his previous three seasons before 2024-25, including a career-high 55 in 2021-22 with Calgary. During that season, he also set another career-high with 35 goals, so he can put the puck in the net when playing at his best.
If the Devils were to bring in Mangiapane, he could slot nicely on their third line and on one of their power-play units. However, he also could move up the Devils' lineup in a top-six role, especially if he regains his previous offensive form.
Overall, on an affordable prove-it deal, Mangiapane could be a good pickup for a Devils team that needs more offense. It will be interesting to see if the Devils end up making a big push for the Toronto native from here.
