This former Devils defender has been claimed off waivers.

Former New Jersey Devils defenseman Dakota Mermis is on the move. The left-shot defenseman has been claimed off waivers by the Utah Hockey Club.

Mermis, 30, signed a one-year, $775,000 contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs during this past off-season. He suffered a broken jaw during training but recently returned to action with the Toronto Marlies on a conditioning loan. He had one assist in three contests during it.

After being activated off long-term injured reserve, Mermis needed to be placed on waivers in order to continue playing for the Marlies. However, he has now been claimed by Utah and will instead be a solid depth option for their blueline.

Mermis played in 10 games as a Devil during the 2019-20 season, where he had one goal, three assists, and a plus-7 rating.

Mermis appeared in 47 games last season with the Minnesota Wild, posting new career highs with three goals, five assists, eight points, and 45 hits. It will be fascinating to see how much of an impact he can make with Utah from here.
