At the 2025 NHL trade deadline, former New Jersey Devils forward Fabian Zetterlund was traded to the Ottawa Senators by the San Jose Sharks. The move was certainly surprising, as the former Devil was not necessarily creating much chatter in the rumor mill leading up to it and was a key forward in San Jose's lineup.
However, it is also understandable that the Senators brought in Zetterlund. They are looking to officially secure a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and Zetterlund undoubtedly has the potential to strengthen their forward group because of his skill.
Yet, Zetterlund has had a tough time adjusting to his new team early on. In his first 13 games with the Senators, he has just one assist to go along with a minus-2 rating. This includes not recording a point in each of his last four games.
Sometimes, it takes a player some time to adjust to a new club, and this is likely what's occurring with Zetterlund. When looking at his past stats, he certainly has the potential to heat back up. In 64 games with the Sharks this season before the trade, he had 17 goals and 36 points. This was after he posted 24 goals and 44 points in 82 games last season with San Jose.
Nevertheless, it will now be interesting to see if Zetterlund can snap his cold streak with the Senators soon. If he regains his scoring touch, it would only make the Senators a more challenging team to go up against.
In 59 games over two seasons with the Devils, the 2017 third-round pick had nine goals, 28 points, and a plus-9 rating.
