The New Jersey Devils will be aiming to improve their forward group this off-season. When looking at their current roster, it is fair to say that they could use another top-six winger, especially.
Due to this, in a recent article for The Athletic, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun wrote that he believes the Devils will pay attention to what happens between the Dallas Stars and their top trade candidate, Jason Robertson.
LeBrun writes:
"GM Tom Fitzgerald continues to scour the market looking for top-six or top-nine forward help. I think he will keep an eye on where the Jason Robertson situation goes with the Dallas Stars, for example."
It would be understandable if the Devils made a push for Robertson this off-season if he is officially made available. There is no question that they could use an elite left winger on their first line with Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt, and acquiring Robertson would give them just that. Furthermore, he would give them another big-time weapon on their power play.
Robertson, 25, is coming off another strong season with Dallas, as he posted 35 goals, 80 points, and a plus-10 rating in 82 games. This was the third season in a row that Robertson had at least 80 points, with his highest totals being 46 goals, 63 assists, and 109 points in 82 games during the 2022-23 campaign. With numbers like these, Robertson would be a massive addition to the Devils' roster.
Robertson has a $7.75 million cap hit until the end of next season and can become a restricted free agent following it. Due to this and the Stars' limited cap space, Robertson's name has been floating around the rumor mill. However, the Stars also recently traded forward Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken in a cap dump move. Thus, a Robertson trade is far from a guarantee. Still, he would be a great pickup for the Devils if officially shopped.
