NHL revenue is expected to hit a record high of $6.2 billion this season. Additionally, both in-person attendance and TV ratings are breaking records as well. In a recent study, WalletHub did a deep dive to determine the best places to be if you're a hockey fan. As a surprise to some, Newark, home of the New Jersey Devils, made the top 10.
"We ranked 76 U.S. cities based on 21 key indicators of a good hockey city. Our data set ranges from ticket prices to stadium capacity to the performance level of each city's teams," wrote WalletHub Financial Writer Adam McCann.
The top 10 is as follows: (1) Boston, MA; (2) Pittsburgh, PA; (3) Detroit, MI; (4) Denver, CO; (5) St. Louis, MO; (6) New York, NY; (7) Newark, NJ; (8) Tampa, FL; (9) Raleigh, NC; (10) Sunrise, FL.
"The best cities for hockey provide good opportunities to watch high-performing NHL teams in person, and sometimes NCAA teams as well," said WalletHub Analyst Cassandra Happe. "They also have some of the most dedicated fans in the country."
Prudential Center, which holds 16,514 hockey fans, was named one of Front Office Sports' 2024 Best Venue Award Winners, joining TD Garden and Wells Fargo Center.
Since coming to New Jersey in 1982, the Devils have three Stanley Cups, five conference championships, and nine division championships. The club is coming off a disappointing 2023-24 campaign, but there are plenty of reasons for fans to be hopeful. Despite the past few months, the future looks bright in Newark between their new head coach and young core headlined by Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes.
