The New Jersey Devils are undoubtedly a team to watch with the NHL Entry Draft and the start of free agency rapidly approaching. The Devils are expected to be busy this summer as they look to take that next step and cement themselves as true contenders.

One way the Devils could look to improve their roster is by bringing in another top-six forward. When looking at trade candidates around the league who could make a lot of sense for the Devils, Colorado Avalanche forward Martin Necas stands out big time.

Necas has been creating chatter in the rumor mill, as the 26-year-old forward is entering the final season of his deal. In addition, Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos recently reported that Necas "wasn't overly thrilled with his experience in Colorado" and that the star forward "wants to explore other options."

If the Avalanche do, in fact, shop Necas this off-season, the Devils would be wise to make a serious push for him. When looking at their current lineup, Necas would give them a significant upgrade over Ondrej Palat in their top six. Necas could make some real magic on the Devils' first line with star forwards Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt. In addition, Necas' offensive skill would make him a major pickup for their power play.

Necas had a marvelous season split between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Avalanche in 2024-25. In 79 games, he scored 27 goals and set new career highs with 56 assists and 83 points. With offense like this, he could be the kind of big piece that helps the Devils hit that next level. It will be intriguing to see if they pursue him from here.
