"As for points, I don't really have those goals like I used to when I was younger, but if I can chip in offensively and get into an area, like 15 points or more, that'd be great, but it's not really something that I look forward to."

When Brendan Smith arrived in New Jersey, he made it clear that, for him, team goals would always take priority over individual goals.

In his first season with the New Jersey Devils, he collected five assists through 60 games. He did not come close to that 15-point range, but one season later, the veteran defenseman has 14 points with five games remaining. He can earn a new career-high in goals (six) and match his career-high in points (19).

On Saturday night, against the Ottawa Senators, Smith was the star of the show, quite literally.

He was named the game's first star after earning three points (one goal, two assists).

"The puck found its way into the net. They don't normally do that," Smith said. "For me, it was great. Guys were able to find me. I'll take it because they don't come very often for me."

The 35-year-old has five points over his last five games and scored goals in consecutive games for the first time in his career. Per the postgame media notes, it was the third time Smith earned points in consecutive games in his career.

"You know what you're getting from (Smith) every night," interim head coach Travis Green said. "He's a hard-nosed guy, plays a lot of hard minutes. He's not afraid to sacrifice his body for the team. Anytime a guy like that gets a few points, you're happy for him."

Smith registered three points in a single game for the first time in his career. Before Saturday's game, He recorded 11 two-point games.

The Mimico, Ontario, native is not known for his offensive prowess as he is one of the team's more defensive-minded defensemen. He is heavily relied upon on the penalty kill and against the Senators, blocked three big shots in front of his goaltender, Jake Allen.

"Every game, he does little things right. Obviously, great to see him get on the board as well," Hischier said.

Smith will look to extend his goal and point streak on Sunday night when the Devils host the Nashville Predators at Prudential Center.
