New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy is scratching defenseman Scott Mayfield against the San Jose Sharks.
The 32-year-old, who is in the fifth season of a seven-year deal worth $3.5 million annually, will be scratched for the fourth time in the last six games.
Missing the last four games before the NHL's 4 Nations break due to a lower-body injury, Mayfield struggled in their 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars.
He then served as a healthy scratch in their 5-1 loss to the New York Rangers, their 2-1 over the Boston Bruins and their 7-4 win over the Nashville Predators.
Roy called on him against the New York Rangers last Monday, with Mayfield serving as the No. 7 defenseman (9:04) in a 4-0 loss. Then, on the second leg of a back-to-back against the Winnipeg Jets, Roy elected to play Mayfield as the No. 6 defenseman, with Adam Boqvist coming out of the lineup.
The Islanders came away with a 3-2 victory, with Mayfield playing 14:46.
But, Roy has elected to turn back to Boqvist, as Mayfield comes out.
With Mike Reilly being activated off of long-term injured reserve on Saturday afternoon, the Islanders now have nine defenseman rostered.

It makes you wonder if the Islanders had any offers on the table to move Mayfield or another defenseman before Friday's 3 PM ET Trade Deadline.
Mayfield has a full no-trade clause through the 2026-27 season.
