The New York Rangers lost to the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2, dropping to 4-7-2 in January.
Jonathan Marchessault scored a hat trick, the Golden Knights scored two goals in 46 seconds, and the Rangers never led in the loss.
Here’s how it happened:
Sheldon Rempal opened the scoring at the 14:58 mark of the first period, getting behind Braden Schneider to redirect a puck past Igor Shesterkin.
Shortly after, Ryan Lindgren took a hit behind his net from Keegan Kolesar and immediately went to the dressing room. He did not return for the rest of the contest. The 25-year-old rearguard only skated 2:35 TOI in before exiting.
Blake Wheeler tied the game at 1-1 two minutes later with a wrister from the right circle that beat Adin Hill clean far-side.
It was the 37-year-old forward's eighth goal of the season, with Adam Fox and Erik Gustafsson assisting the tally.
The Rangers began the second period successfully killing off a Golden Knights power play.
Keegan Kolesar created a breakaway opportunity and scored a perfectly placed shot to beat Shesterkin's top shelf, taking a 2-1 lead at the 3:18 mark of the second frame.
Jonathan Marchessault got a bounce off of an Ivan Barbashev shot to put the Golden Knights up 3-1 at the 4:04 time stamp. Both goals came in 46 seconds.
Marchessault scored his second goal of the game to make the score 4-1 on a complete breakdown by the Rangers.
Kaapo Kakko scored with less than a minute remaining to make the score 4-2. Marchessault scored to make it 5-2, completing his hat trick.
