The New York Rangers might be planning something big.
According to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, Rangers general manager Chris Drury is telling teams around the league that he’s looking to clear cap space.
New York already waived Barclay Goodrow, but it doesn't seem that will be their last salary dump move before the Free Agent Frenzy on July 1.
Kaplan reported that Drury met with Jacob Trouba to discuss his future. The Rangers captain still has two years left on his contract with a cap hit of $8 million.
With the Rangers aggressively trying to clear cap space, it’s safe to assume that Drury has a plan that he is looking to pursue.
There are a couple big-name free agents set to hit the market this offseason who the Rangers could go after including Jake Guentzel and Steven Stamkos.
The Rangers have been linked to Guentzel and reportedly are one of the team’s with interest in the star forward.
However, the Rangers have not been connected with Stamkos at all. It was officially announced today that the longtime Lightning captain will not sign an extension with Tampa Bay before July 1 and the Big Apple sounds like a desirable destination if he indeed decides to leave the Lightning.
The Rangers have two days to clear more money in order to be a part of these critical sweepstakes that can very well change the balance in the NHL.
