The Flyers will head into their one-stop road trip on a three-game losing streak.

The Flyers suffered another disappointing loss on home ice, this time against the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was yet another instance of the Flyers playing well, but letting teams capitalize on their momentary lapses in focus and not being able to put away the chances they're able to create. There were some bright spots to reflect on, but following a five-game win streak with a three-game stumbling leaves much to be addressed.

The Young Guns Aren't Messing Around

Jamie Drysdale got his first goal as a Flyer. Joel Farabee earned a career-high 40th point in his 300th NHL game. Morgan Frost now has 12 points in his last 12 games, assisting Drysdale's power play (!!!) goal. Even Cam York got in on the action with a goal of his own (and another Frost assist!) There just aren't enough ways to describe how essential the young players have been to this team in January.

All three make magic happen separately, but when they're able to combine on plays, it's really something special. When your offense is being commanded by players young enough to (probably) know a few TikTok dances, you know your future is bright.

A Lack of Discipline Cost Them

The Flyers didn't play their neatest game of hockey tonight, and it made their lives ten times harder tonight. Keeping possession of the puck was a weak spot for them through much of the game, and the Lightning were able to fluster them early on. Without the signature Flyers refusal to give up when they fall behind, this game could have very well been over after the Lightning went up 2-0 by the end of the first period. The resilience is great to see, but it would be even better to see them not have to wear themselves out battling back against deficits so often.

Sam Ersson Needs to Be Up For the Challenge

With Carter Hart taking an indefinite leave of absence, Ersson will now officially assume the No. 1 goalie spot. While it can be argued he's been holding it for quite a bit now, he'll be starting more games without the rest afforded by the old system of alternating every two games with Hart. It could be quite a daunting ask of a goalie in his first NHL season, but Ersson has been nothing short of spectacular since shaking off the rust after his first three starts of the season.

As has been the case for a good part of the season, Ersson can't be completely faulted for the pucks that got past him, but all eyes will be on him as the Hart situation unfolds. This will be the real test of Ersson's mental toughness and staying power in the Flyers' lineup.

The fans are certainly behind him. So, you know, no pressure or anything!

The Flyers will take the ice again against the Red Wings in Detroit on Jan. 25 at 7:00 pm EST.
